Training to Live and Win: Intermediate Personal Protection

Primary instructors:

John Boch, John Naese, Jeff Schwarm, Frank Wright.

Class Dates & Location:

Class runs from 9am - ~6pm Saturday and 9am - ~5pm Sunday.

Training to Live and Win is geared towards the carry license holder or anyone serious about prudently approaching the use of deadly force in self-defense. Many of the topics and skills will carry over for the competition shooter as well.

This class will build upon training received in NRA beginner classes relating to many aspects of the judicious use of deadly force against both armed and "unarmed" adversaries.  Students will learn decision making in high-stress situations and how to articulate dangerous circumstances in explaining their reactions to potentially crippling or lethal threats in post-shooting interrogations.  This training will include "shoot - don't shoot" scenarios on a shooting simulator, including critique.

Instruction will also include proper draw and reholstering, reloading, engaging close-range threats, low-light shooting skills with tactical lights, malfunction clearing, shooting around barricades/cover and more.

PREREQUISITE:  NRA Basic Pistol or Personal Protection class or similar formal training.    FOID card is required of Illinois residents as evidence of good character.  Carry permit from any issuing state for out-of-state students.  (May we suggest Pennsylvania (download application) if you don't have one currently.)  Minimum age:  16 years.

Registration: $195. Registration includes lunch, drinks, range fees, safety equipment (as needed), course materials and more.

Students will need 500 rounds of ammunition (caliber restriction:  mimimum .380, maximum .45).  No micro-pocket pistols or rimfires (e.g. Kel-Tec P3AT is a no-go, Glock 26 is perfectly acceptable). Please no magnum ammo on the indoor range (100 rounds).  Eye and ear protection, belt holster, at least two spare magazines / speedloaders and belt carrier(s), tactical flashlight (with spare batteries) and brimmed hat (keeps hot brass from behind your glasses).
